WordPress 4.7 Release Candidate

The release candidate for WordPress 4.7 is now available.

RC means we think we’re done, but with millions of users and thousands of plugins and themes, it’s possible we’ve missed something. We hope to ship WordPress 4.7 on Tuesday, December 6, but we need your help to get there. If you haven’t tested 4.7 yet, now is the time! To test WordPress 4.7, you can use the WordPress Beta Tester plugin or you can download the release candidate here (zip).

WordPress 4.7 is a jam-packed release, with a number of features focused on getting a theme set up for the first time. Highlights include a new default theme, video headers, custom CSS, customizer edit shortcuts, PDF thumbnail previews, user admin languages, REST API content endpoints, post type templates, and more.

We’ve made quite a few refinements since releasing Beta 4 a week ago, including usability and accessibility enhancements for video headers, media and page template support in starter content, and polishing of how custom CSS can be migrated to and extended by plugins and themes. The REST API endpoints saw a number of bugfixes and notably now have anonymous comment off by default.

Not sure where to start with testing? Try setting up a fresh site on a new installation with Twenty Seventeen (hint: head into customizing your site before touching any pages or widgets) and taking notes on what you enjoyed and what got you stuck. For more details about what’s new in version 4.7, check out the Beta 1Beta 2, Beta 3, and Beta 4 blog posts.

Think you’ve found a bug? Please post to the Alpha/Beta support forum. If any known issues come up, you’ll be able to find them here.

Developers, please test your plugins and themes against WordPress 4.7 and update your plugin’s Tested up to version in the readme to 4.7. If you find compatibility problems please be sure to post to the support forums so we can figure those out before the final release – we work hard to avoid breaking things. An in-depth field guide to developer-focused changes is coming soon on the core development blog.

Do you speak a language other than English? Help us translate WordPress into more than 100 languages! And if you haven’t yet done so, now is a great time to take the Annual WordPress Survey and send it on to your friends.

Happy testing! And now for another Rami Abraham haiku break.

Grass Valley Web Design Company Launches New Site for Aanestad Law

Grass Valley CA web design firm SierraHosts.net is pleased to announce the completion and launch of Aanestad Law's brand new SEO and marketing-optimized WordPress website at AanestadLaw.com

Prior to the launch, the Grass Valley-based estate planning firm was using a static HTML site based on the GoDaddy Website Builder. Because the site was not optimized for SEO, the firm was ranking poorly in local search results and therefore generating few leads from their website. Also problematic was there there was no analytics on the site, so trying to measure and quantify referral traffic was impossible.

SierraHosts's initial step was to install Google analytics on the old site immediately so they could begin gathering data about the traffic that was coming to their site.

The next step was to review Aanestad Law's current marketing initiatives and develop goals as to what they wanted their site to achieve.

Third, in-depth keyword research was done to get a handle on what queries related to Aanestad Law's primary services were being made by prospects located within the law firm's primary service area (Placer and Nevada Counties).

Fourth, competitor research was conducted to determine Aanestad Law's primary competitors and their strengths and weaknesses in regards to their website's SEO optimization.

Next, a focus was placed on improving the page copy throughout the entire site. Erik Aanestad put a lot of work into writing the copy for each page using the primary keywords we discovered during the keyword research phase.

Once the new SEO-optimized page copy was reviewed and polished, it was added to a fresh install of WordPress and the mobile-friendly theme was customized to match the firm's existing branding and color scheme. Page titles, URLs, and meta descriptions were optimized for each page. Custom email forms were built for each main service page to encourage visitors to take immediate action. A dynamic RSVP form was built so that Aanestad Law can now accept sign-ups for their free estate planning workshops right on their website. And of course, metrics about site visitors, page views, referrals, keyword CTR's, and more can now be fully analyzed thanks to the power of Google Analytics.

In a thank you note sent from Mr. Aanestad, he wrote:
Many thanks Paul for all your work with the website to grow our business - we really appreciate it!
We're glad to help, Erik! And it was a true pleasure working with you.

Grass Valley SEO Firm Offers Free Website Audits On Google Algo Changes

Grass Valley SEO offers free website audits to small business owners
60% of all searches are done on a smartphone. Now, Google is taking a "mobile-first" approach to ranking websites in their search results.

The big question for small business owners is: is your website ready -- and more importantly -- are you leaving serious money on the table by not adapting to these Google algo changes accordingly?

In early November, news reports revealed that Google began experimenting with their "mobile-first indexing of the Web". This means they are now moving to indexing the mobile version of websites instead of the desktop version, as was their common practice in the past. The important take-away of this development is that Google will now analyze a site's mobile pages against ranking signals to determine how a site will rank in both mobile and desktop search results.

Soon, all the information about your mobile site (page speed, content, meta tags, structured data, etc.) will determine both your mobile and desktop rankings in Google.

Is your business website ready for this change?

Grass Valley CA SEO expert The SEO Guy is offering small businesses a FREE SEO Website Audit to find out if these new changes will affect their website's search rankings and how those rankings can be maintained or improved going forward.

For more information on what’s new in 4.7, check out the Beta 1, Beta 2, and Beta 3 blog posts, along with in-depth developer guides on make/core. We’ve made about 60 changes in the last few days for beta 4, including tweaks to Twenty Seventeen, custom CSS, and the REST API content endpoints.
